There is this weird cross-current thing happening between media formats. I feel like on TV especially by virtue of things like reality and lifestyle television, expressions of women's lives are getting narrowed into these incredibly shallow slices of experience.

On the other hand in music, the past 10 years have seen more and more female musicians capturing wide audiences and their lyrics and songs capture a much wider breadth of experience than one would get from tv's portrayal of women.

So the relative ease of production associated with music + globalized distribution is definitely a plus as far as representations of gender are concerned.

Oh yes, and hats off to Mike for making me listen to LL in the first place, that's one big old lezzie point for you Mike, way to bat for the away team :)
